JL Audio 13TW5

The JL Audio 13TW5 are 13.5" flat-styled subwoofers that are some of the thinnest high-powered subwoofers on the market. To give context to this claim, a typical 12" driver requires well over one cubic foot to operate properly whereas the 13TW5 needs only 0.8 cubic feet.

Extra large voice coils (7" x 5.5" diameter) are installed to handle large amounts of power, which compensates for the small enclosure requirement. What usually happens is the smaller the enclosure, the muddier and less powerful the bass response. In this case however, a unique design of the 'concentric tube' structure allows for the accommodation of very large voice coils and the placing of the woofer motor further forward thus a 'flat' speaker.  This design allows for a range of mounting possibilities where space is limited, also allowing for a very shallow mounting depth of only 2.5". JL Audio Grille Mesh are compatible with the 13TW5s which provide both protection of the speakers and a sleek look. So far the 13TW5s are the only speakers in the new TW5 series, and are based on this new technology announced by JL Audio at the January 2008 CES convention.
